Everyone says "eat a balanced breakfast." Almost no one says what that actually means, or how to pull it off when you're locking your bike outside Račkoga at 8:02, or grabbing a table on Zvonimirova between two meetings.
So let's actually answer it. What makes a breakfast balanced, why does it matter more on your busiest mornings (not your calmest ones), and how do you get one without cooking, blending, or juicing anything yourself before 9 a.m.?
That last part, by the way, is the whole reason the Morning Club exists.
Balanced Doesn't Mean Complicated
A balanced breakfast is really just four things showing up on the same plate, bowl, or glass at the same time:
Protein: Keeps you full and steady, instead of hungry again by 10:30
Fibre: Slows everything down so you don't spike and crash
Healthy fats: The ones that actually support focus, not the ones that just taste good
Real, unprocessed ingredients: Nothing your body has to "figure out".
Miss one of these and you feel it by mid-morning: the shakiness, the sudden hunger, the reach for a second coffee that isn't really about the coffee. Most rushed breakfasts — a pastry standing up, a coffee on its own, nothing at all — are missing two or three of the four.
Why the Rush Is Exactly the Problem
Here's the part nobody tells you: the busier your morning is, the more a balanced breakfast matters, not less. Skipping breakfast, or grabbing whatever's fastest, doesn't save you time. It just moves the cost to 11 a.m., in the form of low energy, a foggy head, and cravings you didn't have to have.
We built Jo & The Sisters around exactly this problem. As we say on our About page, eating well is usually the first thing sacrificed on busy mornings, so we made the Morning Club a place to stop when time is tight, and a calm place to sit when it isn't.
What This Looks Like on Our Menu
We didn't build our menu around trends. We built it with a nutritionist, around the four things above, and made everything by hand: no industrial production, no ready-made mixtures, granola made in-house, juices pressed from 100% fruit and veg with no added water. Here's what "balanced" looks like in practice:
If you're eating at the table: The Peach Protein Bowl is our go-to answer to "what's actually balanced here?" with oats, flax seeds, homemade almond milk, vanilla protein, caramelised peaches, coconut yogurt, and homemade granola. Protein, fibre, and healthy fats in one bowl, no assembly required.
Prefer something green? The Tropical Green Bowl pairs mango and banana with avocado, Greek yogurt, and chia, the healthy-fat-plus-fibre combo that keeps you steady past lunch, not just past 10 a.m.
If you're walking out the door: The Avocado Royale Toast, arugula, tofu or mozzarella, homemade avocado smash, on sourdough, is built for exactly this. So is a Jo's Energy smoothie (almond milk, mango, banana, oats, vegan vanilla protein, almond butter), which is a full breakfast you can drink on the way to Zvonimirova, Sukoišan, or Račkoga without breaking stride.
If you just need something small but real: A Protein Pudding or a Cold Pressed Juice like Green Goddess (apple, lemon, celery, spinach, ginger) fills the gap between "nothing" and "a full meal," real ingredients, no shortcuts, ready when you are.
Zagreb or Split, the Standard Doesn't Change
Whether you're stopping by our Račkoga spot in the middle of Zagreb, or one of our two Split locations on Zvonimirova or Sukoišan, the idea is the same: balanced food, made by hand, with care for every ingredient, fast enough for a rushed morning, good enough for a slow one.
That's really the whole philosophy behind the Morning Club. Not another rule about what you should eat. Just breakfast that's already balanced, so you don't have to think about it before your first coffee.
Stop for breakfast. Stay for the feeling.
